Kyiv to Begin Connecting Residential Buildings to Central Heating Starting November 2, with Completion Expected Within a Week

У Києві 2 листопада розпочнеться підключення житлових будинків до централізованого опалення, яке планують завершити протягом тижня.

Central Heating Connections Underway

Starting November 2, Kyiv will initiate the process of linking residential buildings to the city's centralized heating system, a procedure expected to take up to seven days. This announcement was made by Mayor Vitali Klitschko on October 30. Meanwhile, the heating season for social institutions in the capital began earlier, on October 16. To date, heating has already been supplied to the following facilities:

  • 157 healthcare institutions
  • 402 kindergartens
  • 85 schools

The preparations for the heating season come amid intensified Russian attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. On September 30, Russian forces launched massive strikes on energy facilities, damaging the Trypil Thermal Power Plant in the Kyiv region. That same day, emergency blackout schedules were implemented across Kyiv and its surrounding areas. Additionally, on October 11, several districts of the city experienced power outages due to attacks on electrical networks.

On October 14, Russian troops targeted all three of Kyiv’s combined heat and power plants as well as energy sites in the Kharkiv region. Sergey Koretsky noted that

“Russian forces have escalated their concentrated attacks on energy infrastructure.”
President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that since the declaration of the so-called “energy truce,” Russian forces have carried out 76 assaults on Ukraine's energy and oil-and-gas facilities. The strikes continue to affect residential buildings and industrial sites.

Preparing for the Heating Season

In response to these threats, Naftogaz has developed 24 different scenarios to navigate the heating season, taking into account potential attacks, weather conditions, and domestic gas production. The decision to activate heating in residential areas was made proactively to ensure uninterrupted heat supply despite the escalating energy challenges facing the country.

Connecting homes to centralized heating in Kyiv is a critical measure to maintain comfortable living conditions for residents, especially during wartime and ongoing energy crises. Successfully managing this process could serve as a model for other Ukrainian cities grappling with similar energy supply difficulties. It is essential that all preparations for the heating season are carried out efficiently to prevent emergencies during the winter months.

As Kyiv prepares to enhance its heating infrastructure, residents should also consider how to brace for potential disruptions during the heating season. With the ongoing threat to energy supplies, understanding how to equip homes for prolonged power outages is crucial.
