Suspect Held for Aiding Illegal Draft Dodging
Law enforcement in Kyiv has detained a man suspected of facilitating illegal draft evasion and attempting to bribe a court for a favorable ruling. The operation in the capital uncovered a scheme organized by a 30-year-old native of the Chernihiv region. The suspect allegedly promised a man liable for military service that he would remove him from the 'Oberih' wanted persons database in exchange for 95,700 hryvnias (approximately $2,400).
In a separate case, the same individual demanded $35,000 to influence the outcome of a civil court proceeding. Authorities seized the funds after they were handed over. The detainee's actions are being prosecuted under several articles of Ukraine's Criminal Code, including Part 5 of Article 27, Part 3 of Article 368, and Part 3 of Article 369-2. These charges carry a potential penalty of up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.
A Second Case in the Capital
In a related Kyiv case, a 35-year-old resident is on trial, accused of helping someone illegally cross the Ukrainian border for $20,000. The court has ordered the suspected mobilization scheme organizer to be held in custody, with bail as a possibility. Investigators are continuing their work to uncover all details of these cases.
These incidents highlight the ongoing challenge of draft evasion in Ukraine, a critical issue as the country continues its defense against the full-scale invasion. Ukrainian law enforcement is actively targeting corruption and abuse within the mobilization system. The arrests demonstrate the state's efforts to uphold the rule of law and ensure fairness, even under the extreme pressures of war.
