Kyiv Debuts New Traffic Light Standard: What Drivers Need to Know

Київ вводить нові світлофорні правила: важливі моменти для водіїв

New Traffic Lights Installed in Kyiv

Kyiv has installed its first new-standard traffic light on Mykhailivska Square, featuring an additional red contour. This installation marks the beginning of a city-wide transition to the updated DSTU 4092:2024 standards, aimed at reducing traffic accidents in the capital. The new traffic lights with red contours will gradually appear across the city, replacing older devices that have reached the end of their service life. This update aligns with broader European trends in using clearer visual signals to enhance road safety.

The traffic light, positioned in the direction of Mykhailivska Street, is equipped with an extra luminous contour in the shape of a red circle. The additional arrow signal section now also features a red circle, which clearly indicates to drivers that a turn is prohibited. Simultaneously, a green arrow signals that a turn is permitted.

"The red contour clearly conveys to drivers that a turn is forbidden, and this signal is highly visible both at night and under any weather conditions," - the Center for Traffic Organization.

Enhancing Road Traffic Safety

A new traffic light facility has also become operational on Mykhaila Maksymovycha Street, near buildings No. 7 and No. 9. This facility was constructed following barrier-free principles and is located at the site of a former unregulated pedestrian crossing. The implementation of these new traffic lights represents a significant step in improving road safety in the capital.

The installation of the new red-contour traffic lights in Kyiv is part of a broader strategy to upgrade road infrastructure and enhance safety. The change in standards has the potential to significantly reduce the number of traffic accidents, as the new lights provide clearer signals to drivers. The gradual replacement of old traffic lights with new ones also demonstrates the city administration's commitment to modernizing the transport system.

In addition to the new traffic lights, the city is also focusing on enhancing pedestrian safety. Plans are in place for the construction of several new pedestrian crossings, which will further contribute to safer road conditions.
