Kyiv to Construct Five New Pedestrian Crossings by 2026

According to Главком: Kyiv's Department of Transport Infrastructure has announced plans to build five new at-grade pedestrian crossings across the city by 2026. The Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) has released the specific addresses for these crossings and provided an update on the current status of each project. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the capital's urban infrastructure.

The new crossings will be installed at the following key intersections in the coming years:

  • At the intersection of Yevhena Konovaltsia and Velyka Vasylkivska streets, near the Ukraina Palace;
  • At the intersection of Mykhailivska and Khreshchatyk streets, near Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square);
  • At the intersection of Kostiantynivska and Nyzhniy & Verkhniy Val streets, close to the Kontraktova Ploshcha metro station;
  • At the intersection of Velyka Vasylkivska Street and Bessarabskyi Proizd, near the Ploshcha Ukrainskykh Heroiv metro station;
  • On Lesi Ukrainky Boulevard, 26.

Project Status and Pedestrian Safety

Preparatory work is already underway for several of the crossings. At the intersection of Kostiantynivska and the Val streets, traffic management plans have been approved, traffic lights installed, and electrical networks laid. At the Konovaltsia and Velyka Vasylkivska intersection, the patrol police have also approved the traffic organization scheme. Furthermore, a contract has been signed to develop design documentation for installing a traffic light on Lesi Ukrainky Boulevard.

Additionally, traffic schemes for the intersections of Mykhailivska and Khreshchatyk (after final revisions) and Velyka Vasylkivska and Bessarabskyi Proizd have been submitted to the patrol police for approval. In a related safety upgrade, a new regulated surface-level crossing was completed in May 2025 to provide an alternative to the existing underground passage on Khreshchatyk Street. These measures are aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and convenience for movement around the capital.

The planned new pedestrian crossings in Kyiv demonstrate the city administration's efforts to improve infrastructure and ensure pedestrian safety in central districts.

The importance of these improvements is growing against a backdrop of increasing vehicular traffic and the need for safe pedestrian pathways. The implementation of these projects is expected to significantly impact the comfort and safety of both residents and tourists navigating the city.
