The Human Cost of Mobilization on Families
In Kryvyi Rih, a 34-year-old man who was the sole caregiver for his five-year-old daughter has been conscripted. When he was taken for military service, the child was at kindergarten, leaving her without a guardian. After his divorce, the father had assumed all parenting responsibilities. Despite applying twice for a deferment, both requests were denied.
Ukraine’s Ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, has stepped in, instructing his representative in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Oleksii Urlatkin, to investigate the case. Lubinets emphasized that human considerations must not be overlooked in mobilization procedures, stating:
'At the heart of stories like these, there should never be just a procedure or a formality. Mobilization is necessary for a country defending itself. But a state’s strength is measured not only by its ability to act quickly—but also by its capacity to see the person behind every decision.' Dmytro Lubinets
The regional ombudsman’s office has already sent inquiries to the Pokrovsk-Ternivskyi Military Recruitment Center, child welfare services, and district executive committees in Kryvyi Rih to clarify the details and ensure the child’s well-being. For now, the girl is temporarily under the care of the kindergarten principal. This incident has sparked public concern, as the issue of child custody during mobilization becomes increasingly urgent.
Striking a Balance Between Military Needs and Social Responsibilities
This situation highlights the critical need to balance military demands with social obligations, especially when children are involved. As mobilization calls up more men and women for service, ensuring proper care for children has become a pressing societal challenge.
The Ombudsman’s swift response underscores the importance of considering individual circumstances and protecting children’s rights in such difficult scenarios.
This case adds to a growing list of troubling incidents involving children's welfare amid the ongoing mobilization efforts in Ukraine. For instance, a recent incident in the Odesa region highlights another serious issue, where a mother was arrested for abusing her young son. Such stories emphasize the urgent need to address the implications of military conscription on family dynamics and child safety.
