Woman Detained on Suspicion of Abusing Her Child

According to Главком: A 36-year-old woman has been arrested in the Odesa region on suspicion of torturing her own five-year-old son. The incident occurred on the evening of June 25 in a private home in a village within the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district. Under the influence of alcohol, the woman beat the child with her hands and the wooden handle of an axe. After neighbors called emergency services at 102, the boy was rushed to the hospital.

Child’s Condition and Response from Authorities

Doctors diagnosed the boy with a closed head injury, a concussion, numerous bruises, and abrasions. His life is not in danger. It was revealed that the family was already registered with the Child Services agency as being in difficult life circumstances. In addition to the victim, the household includes three other young sons, who are currently staying with their father.

The woman has been notified of suspicion under Article 127, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which carries a penalty of up to six years in prison. The court has ordered her to be held in custody. A separate criminal investigation has been launched under Article 367 of the Criminal Code regarding potential negligence by Child Services officials. The Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi District Prosecutor’s Office is overseeing the case.

“Because her son wouldn’t stop crying, she beat him with her hands and the wooden handle of an axe,” police reported.

This case has sparked widespread outrage among local residents and raised serious concerns about the oversight of families under social services supervision.

This incident highlights systemic issues faced by social services in Ukraine and underscores the urgent need for timely detection and response to cases of domestic violence. Authorities and the community must collaborate to improve support for families in crisis, aiming to prevent such tragedies in the future.

This disturbing incident in Odesa is not an isolated case in Ukraine, as highlighted by a recent tragedy in Dnipro involving the rape and murder of an 11-year-old boy. Such events raise critical questions about the effectiveness of child protection services and their ability to safeguard vulnerable children in high-risk environments.
