Successful Stroke Treatment for a 101-Year-Old Patient in Lviv
Doctors at the Danylo Halytskyi University Hospital in Lviv saved the life of 101-year-old Uliana, who arrived with an ischemic stroke. A critical factor in her recovery was the rapid transport to the hospital, which allowed medical staff to administer thrombolytic therapy within the 4.5-hour therapeutic window. From the onset of symptoms to hospitalization, only two hours had passed.
Therapy Outcomes and the Value of Quick Action
Following the treatment, Uliana showed clear signs of improvement.
“Because the patient was brought to the hospital in time, we were able to perform thrombolytic therapy, and she responded positively,” said neurologist Mariana Averchuk.Initially unable to swallow on her own, she required a nasogastric tube. However, by the fourth day after treatment, the tube was removed, and Uliana began sitting up and standing with assistance. She is also gradually regaining her ability to speak.
The patient has returned home and is awaiting a one-month inpatient rehabilitation program. Specialists emphasize the urgency of recognizing the earliest signs of a stroke, noting that
“every minute during a stroke, 2 million nerve cells die, so time is extremely precious to prevent irreversible brain damage.”
Doctors urge the public not to delay and to call an ambulance or go to the hospital immediately at the first symptoms of a stroke. Uliana’s case highlights the life-saving potential of emergency medical care and the effectiveness of modern treatments, even for very elderly patients.
This story demonstrates how crucial it is to act quickly when stroke symptoms appear, as the speed of response can dramatically influence treatment outcomes. The skill of the medical team and advanced therapeutic techniques made positive results possible for a patient of advanced age, underscoring the importance of high-quality healthcare in Ukraine. Greater public awareness of stroke symptoms could help reduce disability and mortality rates from this condition.
