Heavy Leg Syndrome and Varicose Veins

According to Главком: According to vascular surgeon Vladyslav Horbovets, persistent heaviness in the legs is often the earliest warning sign of varicose veins. When these symptoms are ignored, serious complications like thrombophlebitis and pulmonary embolism-a potentially fatal condition-can develop. In the initial stages, varicose veins typically show up as cosmetic issues such as spider veins, bulging varicose veins, and bruising. Notably, women tend to seek medical help earlier in the disease process, while men often delay until the condition has significantly worsened.

Complications of Varicose Veins

Potential complications include:

  • trophic skin changes
  • ulcers
  • thrombophlebitis

“Thrombophlebitis occurs when a blood clot forms in a dilated varicose vein due to damage to the venous wall and impaired circulation. This triggers inflammation of the vein wall and surrounding tissues.”

- Vladyslav Horbovets

This condition can escalate into thromboembolism, where the clot breaks free and blocks a blood vessel elsewhere in the body.

Over the past eight years, a Ukrainian-developed technique called endovenous electrocoagulation has achieved a 100% success rate in closing affected veins. This technology builds on research from the Paton Institute, with initial large-scale trials conducted in the Anti-Terrorist Operation zone. Separately, surgeons at the National Center of Surgery and Transplantation named after Oleksandr Shalimov, along with trauma specialists from the Ministry of Internal Affairs hospital, performed a groundbreaking operation transplanting two bone fragments each 22 centimeters long.

Additionally, Ukraine has seen a sharp increase in cases of stress-induced cardiomyopathy, commonly known as broken heart syndrome. This rise is linked to the unrelenting critical stress that the Ukrainian population has endured for over four years. Given these risks, it is essential to recognize varicose vein symptoms early and consult a doctor promptly to prevent severe outcomes.

Raising public awareness about these symptoms and the importance of timely medical care is crucial. Advances in treatment, such as endovenous electrocoagulation, offer new hope for patients. At the same time, the surge in broken heart syndrome cases underscores the extreme conditions facing the country, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to healthcare.

As the emotional toll of ongoing conflicts becomes increasingly evident, experts have noted a surge in cases of stress-related heart conditions. This alarming trend underscores the importance of addressing not only physical health issues like varicose veins but also the psychological impacts of stress. For a deeper understanding of how the current situation in Ukraine is contributing to this rise in stress-induced cardiomyopathy, it's crucial to stay informed about these interconnected health challenges.
