Horuna Cup 2026 - Artan Edition: A Major Karate Event
On March 21, Lviv hosted the second Horuna Cup 2026 - Artan edition karate tournament, an event founded by Olympic medalist Stanislav Horuna. The competition, which holds the prestigious UKF Series A status, drew over 600 athletes from 45 clubs across 14 regions of Ukraine. This tournament serves as a crucial proving ground for Ukrainian karate, allowing competitors to showcase their skills across multiple categories.
The 'Absolute' Category Showdown
The highlight of the event was the 'Absolute' category, featuring eight elite karatekas. Matches in this division had no time limit, and judges' decisions were made using video replays. The 'Absolute' category champion was Rizvan Talibov, who holds the title of World Games champion. Karate, while not a permanent Olympic sport, features prominently in events like the World Games, which showcase sports not on the core Olympic program.
At the tournament's opening ceremony, Ilya Shevliak, President of the Sports Committee of Ukraine, emphasized the importance of such events for the nation's athletic development.
"This is a brilliant event that has brought the whole country together. It is also another opportunity to thank our defenders, who are safeguarding our future." - Stanislav Horuna
The Horuna Cup 2026 - Artan edition provided another significant platform for promoting karate within Ukraine and supporting Ukrainian athletes. By gathering competitors from diverse regions, the tournament fosters unity and mutual support among the nation's karate community. Such events not only popularize the sport but also help shape a positive image for the country on the international stage, demonstrating resilience and a commitment to sporting excellence.
As Ukrainian karate continues to gain momentum on the international stage, recent competitions highlight both the challenges and achievements faced by the national team. For instance, while the Horuna Cup showcased remarkable talent and unity among athletes, the national team concluded the 2026 Olympics without securing any medals, emphasizing the need for ongoing support and development in the sport.
