Mass grave discovered in Mariupol
A concealed mass grave stretching more than 50 meters has been found at the Starokrymske cemetery in occupied Mariupol. The grave dates back to the fighting for the city in 2022, according to the Mariupol City Council, which cited research by the Mariupol Destruction and Victims foundation. Located in a low-lying area of the cemetery, the site sits roughly 3 kilometers from residential buildings and 2 kilometers from a makeshift morgue on Zaporizhzhia Highway.
Researcher Sergey, known by the handle MRPLmap, first spotted the area on satellite images in 2023. The data shows the plot was clear as of March 29, 2022, but by May 9, 2022, a trench had appeared. It was filled in during the summer of 2022, and images from March 23, 2025, reveal a grass-covered mound. The trench measured about 30 meters long on May 9, 2022, and by August 2024, the mound had grown to 55 meters. The trench was dug in early May 2022.
Possible victims and broader impact
Researchers believe the grave may contain bodies from the building at 127 Myru Avenue, which was destroyed by an airstrike. At least 45 names of those killed in that building have been confirmed, with debris and bodies removed between May 9 and May 25, 2022. Sergey reports that
“there are witnesses who said they saw bones sticking out of an excavator bucket. So bodies mixed with construction waste.”
Notably, in October 2024, the occupation authorities closed the Starokrymske cemetery due to lack of space. Initially, 21 sectors of mass graves appeared there, with 300 to 400 new graves added each week. According to Human Rights Watch, more than 10,000 people were buried in Mariupol during the first year of the full-scale war, at least 8,000 of whom died from combat or related causes.
Sergey notes that
“uncovering hidden mass graves helps restore historical justice and human dignity for the deceased and their relatives, proves war crimes, repression, genocide, and fights Russian propaganda.”This highlights a ban on approaching the area, as no construction took place there.
The discovery of this mass grave in Mariupol underscores the severe toll the war has taken on civilians and the urgent need to document crimes committed during the conflict. It could prove crucial for future war crimes investigations and trials. Given the numerous accounts of civilian deaths, this grave may become a key piece in understanding the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe that unfolded in Ukraine during the war.
The ongoing devastation in Mariupol is highlighted not only by the discovery of this mass grave but also by the systematic destruction of the city's architectural heritage. Recent reports indicate that over 465 buildings have been demolished as occupiers dismantle the historic center of Mariupol, further impacting the community's cultural landscape.
