Construction of the Our Lady of Sorrows Statue
In the town of Konotop, near Toruń, Poland, workers are constructing a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows that will reach 55.6 meters in height. The project is funded by billionaire Roman Karkosik, and the consecration is scheduled for August 15, 2026, coinciding with the Catholic Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The figure of Our Lady of Sorrows will stand over 40 meters tall, atop a 15-meter pedestal. This new monument will be nearly 20 meters higher than the statue of Christ the King in Świebodzin, Poland, and 17.1 meters taller than Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer. Around 2,500 cubic meters of decorative concrete—Artevia Kolor—will be used for the build, supplied by Holcim Polska.
“Projects of this scale demand not only the right materials but, above all, expertise and precision at every stage. By supplying Artevia Kolor, we offer a solution that combines structural durability with a high-quality finish befitting the status of this undertaking.” — Daniel Cekała, representative of Holcim Polska
The statue has already drawn international attention, with outlets like the Financial Times covering the project. Those behind the initiative emphasize that the monument will be not just one of the tallest structures of its kind globally, but also a site of deep spiritual and symbolic importance. “Located near a sanctuary, it is intended to serve as a space for contemplation, pilgrimage, and gatherings,” they stated.
Regional Significance of the Statue
Konotop near Toruń is thus set to become a new pilgrimage hub, with the consecration of the Our Lady of Sorrows statue in August 2026 promising to establish it as a landmark architectural and spiritual site in Poland.
The construction of such a massive statue has sparked considerable interest both within Poland and abroad, as it underscores the region’s religious and cultural values. The structure is meant to be a symbol of faith while also drawing tourists and pilgrims, potentially boosting the local economy. The consecration in August 2026, aligned with the Feast of the Assumption, highlights the monument’s importance to the Catholic community. In this way, Konotop could become a key link in Poland’s religious traditions and beyond.
