In Krakow, police detained a member of the Polish Sejm from the ultra-right and pro-Russian party 'Confederation of Freedom and Independence' Konrad Berkowicz. The man was caught attempting to steal household goods from an Ikea store. The 41-year-old politician tried to carry out kitchenware worth about 400 zlotys.
The law enforcement officials fined the deputy 500 zlotys. In Poland, theft of property worth up to 800 zlotys is considered an administrative offense and has no criminal consequences. The stolen goods were returned to the store, and after paying the fine, Berkowicz was released. The politician did not mention that he is a deputy.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk has already commented on this incident, noting: 'One of the leaders of the Confederation, Berkowicz, was caught attempting to steal from the Ikea store.' A party representative defended the deputy, claiming that he simply did not pay for the items at the self-service checkout. Berkowicz repeated this version in a post on social media.
There is also a scandal involving Polish President Karol Nawrocki, who is suspected of illegally appropriating property.
The deputy of the Sejm was detained for stealing goods from the Ikea store. Law enforcement officials fined him for an administrative offense, but no criminal consequences are provided for under Polish law. This incident also became the cause of a loud scandal related to the suspicion of illegal appropriation of property by the country's president.
