Bill to Establish Ukrainian Music Day

A new bill, registered in Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada under number 12345, seeks to create an official Ukrainian Music Day. The proposed celebration would be held annually on the third Saturday of September. This initiative highlights the ongoing efforts to support and preserve the nation's cultural identity through its musical heritage. The chosen date is tied to the historic 'Chervona Ruta' festival held in Chernivtsi in 1989. Specifically, on September 24, 1989, the Ukrainian national anthem, 'Shche ne vmerla Ukraina,' was performed publicly at the festival's closing ceremony.

The draft legislation underscores the importance of bolstering national musical culture. Its explanatory note states that establishing this day would be a significant step in the process of cultural decolonization and in creating space for the development of national art. It is argued that young performers would gain additional support and a platform to present their work.

Expert Opinion

Oleksandr Sanchenko, a Member of Parliament and head of the subcommittee on the music industry, commented on the significance of Ukrainian music:

'Ukrainian music today is not just art. It is an element of our information security, a part of the cultural front. We have already taken many steps to support the industry, including through specific funding programs. But it is important for the professional music community to have its own day—a date when we can collectively consider what more we can do for the development of Ukrainian music.' Oleksandr Sanchenko

The bill to establish Ukrainian Music Day represents another step on the path to supporting and developing the nation's music industry. This proposal comes at a time when Ukrainian arts are gaining unprecedented global attention. If passed, it could become a pivotal moment for popularizing Ukrainian music, which is experiencing a new phase of growth even amidst wartime challenges. Observing such a day may raise public awareness of Ukrainian artistry, attract new talent to the industry, and underscore state efforts to reinforce cultural identity and preserve national heritage.
