Controversial Cathedral Construction Planned in Rivne Amid Ongoing War

Будівництво собору в Рівному викликає суперечки на фоні війни.

St. George the Victorious Cathedral Project Draws Fire

Plans to begin building the St. George the Victorious Cathedral in Rivne have sparked widespread online backlash. Social media users are sharply criticizing the decision to construct a church while the country is at war, urging authorities to redirect funds toward more pressing needs—such as housing for displaced people or rehabilitation centers for soldiers. The cathedral's design, created by Aranchii Architects—winner of a nationwide competition in 2023—has also drawn mixed reactions.

Construction is scheduled to start in the summer or early fall of 2026. The architectural concept features a tall white structure with five domes and perforated facades on all sides. Despite this, many are questioning the project's relevance during wartime. One user asked:

“I don’t understand why we need this temple in a country at war. Aren’t there enough empty churches already?”

Others proposed alternative uses for the money, saying:

  • “Build apartments for displaced people”
  • “They should build something for the displaced—people have lost everything”

Comments also targeted the design itself. Some compared it to a Muslim mosque or even a crematorium, while others saw it as innovative. One commenter noted:

“The design is simple. Something new and unusual, but it looks really interesting.”

Others expressed hope the project won’t be canceled due to negative feedback: “I was surprised by the negative comments about building a church. I was happy when I saw this news.”

Parallel Controversy in Kyiv

In Kyiv, activist Dmytro Perov has registered a petition calling for the cancellation of an 80-meter skyscraper planned within the buffer zone of the UNESCO-listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, where the maximum building height is 27 meters. This case underscores a broader trend of public criticism toward large-scale construction projects in a country where many believe funds should go toward urgent social needs.

As a result, the plans for the St. George the Victorious Cathedral in Rivne continue to fuel heated public debate, highlighting the need to align such projects with the social realities and priorities of a nation at war. With so many people facing war-related hardships, the question of whether to invest in religious buildings has become especially pressing—society needs support in other areas. Criticism of projects like the one in Rivne may reflect a growing public awareness of the country's most urgent social needs.
