The US State Department believes that a meeting between President Donald Trump and Putin should lead to a cessation of the war in Ukraine. This was reported by deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott at a press briefing in Washington on June 7.
“It's not a question of trust, it's a question of actions. The president outlined how disappointed he has been with the actions we've seen from Russia over the past few weeks.”
Pigott also emphasized that the US expects concrete steps from Russia, not just loud statements. The Trump administration supports diplomatic initiatives to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Cooperation and expectations from Ukrainian and Russian partners
The US government is working with European partners and Ukraine to achieve peace in the region. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has no meetings scheduled with either Ukrainian or Russian representatives at this time.
As for potential new sanctions against Russia, which could be implemented after August 8, no decision has been made yet.
Diplomatic efforts are aimed at a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Ukraine, but the question of further actions remains open.
