Airlines in the USA canceled thousands of flights due to winter storms, extreme cold, and strong winds.
The critical situation arose just days before Christmas, reports CNBC.
According to the tracking website FlightAware, from Wednesday to Friday, carriers have canceled over 5,000 flights in the USA. More than 16,000 American flights have been delayed.

The most canceled flights on Thursday were at the two main airports in Chicago, 'O'Hare' and 'Midway', as well as at Denver International Airport.
On Friday, the most disruptions are expected at New York's 'LaGuardia', in Detroit, and Chicago's 'Midway'.
The weather could also affect flights from Seattle to Boston and North Carolina.
American, Southwest, United, Delta, Spirit, JetBlue, Alaska, and some other airlines made exceptions to the rules. Travelers were allowed to change their departure without incurring a fee for changes or fare differences.
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale struck the United States. It destroyed homes and roads along the extreme northern coast of California and damaged utility infrastructure.
In Poland and the Czech Republic, transportation and pedestrian movement have been complicated due to icy conditions. Ice and snow have paralyzed traffic on roads and railways, as well as sidewalks, local media report.
