Tragedy Strikes Sumy

On July 11, 2024, a Russian attack on the city of Sumy claimed the life of 13-year-old track and field athlete Ulyana Vorona. The assault involved three guided aerial bombs (KABs), two of which struck crowded civilian areas. This devastating incident left 5 people dead and more than 30 others injured.

Vorona was a promising young athlete training at the Viktor Holubnychy Youth Sports School. Her death represents a profound loss not only for her family but also for Ukraine’s entire sporting community. Olga Saladukha, President of the Athletics Federation of Ukraine, commented on the tragedy, stating:

'Russia is destroying our sporting future... in the literal sense of the word. In Sumy on July 11, a 13-year-old track and field athlete, Ulyana Vorona, was killed by a Russian KAB strike. She had her whole life ahead of her—so many plans, hopes, and dreams. She could have brought glory to her city and to Ukraine, but above all, she could have simply lived and been happy.' Olga Saladukha

Saladukha also emphasized that Ukrainian sports must continue to develop in memory of Ulyana and other athletes whose lives have been taken by Russia. She added:

'One of our key tasks is to prevent murderers from returning to international sports arenas. And we will do everything in our power to achieve that.' Olga Saladukha

This tragedy once again highlights the toll of war and the urgent need to continue the fight for peace and the development of sports in Ukraine.

War’s Impact on the Young

The loss of Ulyana Vorona serves as a stark illustration of how war shatters the lives and dreams of young people. Her death underscores not only personal grief but also the broader societal consequences of the conflict, particularly for sports culture.

In response, the Athletics Federation of Ukraine is calling for decisive action to prevent such tragedies from recurring and to shield sports from violence. This event also reinforces the need for continued international support for Ukraine in its pursuit of peace and stability.

The tragic loss of Ulyana Vorona is not an isolated incident, as the ongoing conflict continues to claim the lives of young athletes across Ukraine. Recently, the sports community mourned the deaths of two other promising talents, highlighting the devastating impact of war on the future of sports in the country.
