Bulk Carrier Caffa Detained Off Sweden
Swedish authorities have detained the bulk carrier Caffa near the coastal city of Trelleborg in early March. The action followed a request for international legal assistance from another country. During the operation, officials discovered the vessel was sailing under a false flag and had been placed on Ukraine's sanctions list. Investigators believe the ship may have been transporting grain taken from temporarily occupied territories in Ukraine.
The captain of the Caffa was arrested but released approximately one week before this information was made public. Meanwhile, the Israeli company Cenziper refused to accept cargo linked to stolen grain from occupied Ukrainian regions and declined to unload the vessel at the Port of Haifa due to the risk of international sanctions.
Swedish Coast Guard Actions
Around the same time, off the coast of Trelleborg, the Swedish Coast Guard boarded the 228-meter tanker Sea Owl I, which formally sailed under the flag of the Comoros Islands. Law enforcement suspects the vessel may have been using a fraudulent registration. As of April 7, at least 13 out of 22 sanctioned tankers have avoided passing near the Swedish coast, opting instead for an alternative route south of the Danish island of Bornholm. Previously, most of these vessels used a northern route closer to Sweden's territorial waters.
