Ternopil Unveils Barrier-Free Pathway and Inclusive Playground Near Children's Clinic

Тернопіль презентує новий безперешкодний маршрут та ігровий майданчик для всіх біля дитячої поліклініки.

Enhancements to Ternopil's Accessible Route

The city of Ternopil has completed the development of a fully accessible route adjacent to the children's polyclinic on Mykola Hohol Street. This initiative encompasses not only the creation of a pedestrian-friendly pathway but also features an inclusive playground equipped with swings, rehabilitation exercise equipment, and safety-focused rubber surfacing. The new barrier-free route stretches from the children's clinic on Fedkovych Street to Ruska Street.

As part of the reconstruction, the pavement on Hohol Street was upgraded with new sidewalk materials. Tactile tiles have been installed to assist individuals with visual impairments in navigating the area. Additionally, lowered curbs at pedestrian crossings facilitate easier street crossing for wheelchair users and parents pushing strollers. This renovated section represents a vital addition to Ternopil's growing network of accessible pathways.

"Every day, this route is used by students, university staff, and clinic visitors, including people with disabilities and parents with strollers. Therefore, creating a convenient and accessible pedestrian environment here is especially important," said Ternopil's mayor, Serhiy Nadal.

Inclusive Playground for Children

Funded through the Community Budget program, the inclusive playground offers a dedicated play area with swings and specialized rehabilitation equipment. The site features a rubber surface to ensure safety, along with well-designed pedestrian paths. It caters to children of various ages and those with limited mobility. The space is also enhanced with greenery and benches, providing a welcoming environment for families.

"This work is part of the ‘Movement Without Barriers’ project, aimed at developing accessible urban infrastructure and fostering comfortable mobility for all residents," emphasized Serhiy Nadal.

Upgrading the accessible route in Ternopil marks a significant move toward fostering an inclusive environment for all city residents, particularly people with disabilities and parents with young children. This project will improve access to pedestrian areas and recreational spaces, enhancing the overall quality of life. It also sets a valuable precedent for other Ukrainian cities looking to implement similar accessibility initiatives.

In addition to Ternopil's new inclusive playground, other cities are also making strides in creating accessible recreational spaces. For instance, Chernivtsi recently opened its first free inclusive playground in Shevchenko Park, further highlighting the growing commitment across Ukraine to ensure that children of all abilities have access to safe and enjoyable play areas.
