Rare Virga Phenomenon Spotted Over Vinnytsia: What’s Happening in the Sky

Незвичайне явище в атмосфері: загадкові хмари над Вінницею.

Atmospheric Virga Event Observed in Vinnytsia

On April 22 and April 29, 2026, the city of Vinnytsia recorded a rare atmospheric event known as virga. This phenomenon occurs when raindrops or ice crystals fall into a layer of dry air beneath a cloud, causing them to evaporate or sublimate before ever reaching the ground. Local residents had the chance to witness it on April 29, as well as earlier on April 22.

According to a report published by 'Glavcom' citing the Vinnytsia Regional Center for Hydrometeorology, virga was observed in the city on both dates. This weather event most commonly accompanies:

  • Altocumulus clouds
  • Stratocumulus clouds
  • Cumulonimbus clouds

which create the necessary conditions for its formation.

“Virga is a fascinating atmospheric phenomenon. It was observed in Vinnytsia on April 22 and April 29, 2026,” noted the Vinnytsia Regional Center for Hydrometeorology.

The sighting has drawn attention not only from Vinnytsia residents but also from meteorologists, who continue to study its characteristics and impact on atmospheric processes.

Why Meteorological Research Matters

The observation of virga in Vinnytsia highlights the importance of meteorological studies for understanding atmospheric dynamics. This phenomenon can influence local climate conditions as well as agrometeorological indicators, which are crucial for agriculture. Further research will help clarify how such events may affect the region.
