Ukrainian Sign Language Video Guide Introduced
Vinnytsia’s Lyceum No. 33 has implemented a video guide in Ukrainian Sign Language designed to help visitors navigate the school premises with ease. The guide clearly outlines directions to essential locations within the lyceum, including:
- the cafeteria
- restrooms
- gymnasium
- principal’s office
- both elementary and secondary school sections
Additionally, the video provides a separate route to the shelter area. This initiative was shared by the Vinnytsia City Council. Such accessibility tools are critical in supporting an inclusive environment where all students and visitors can confidently navigate the school.
Hands-On Sign Language Training for Staff
In anticipation of the International Day of Sign Languages on September 23, practical workshops on basic sign language were conducted for the lyceum’s teachers and administration. Currently, 33 students with special educational needs study at the school, attending 22 inclusive classrooms. Each of these classes is supported by a teaching assistant.
Natalia Sydorenko, a school representative, explained: "Some students may require sign language interpretation. Now, even upon arrival, these individuals can understand where to go and what is happening within the lyceum."
She emphasized that assistants play a crucial role in helping teachers organize lessons, while the school’s facilities and grounds are arranged to allow all children to learn and move around without barriers. Sydorenko highlighted the video guide as a vital tool for ensuring access to information: "It allows anyone entering the lyceum to find their destination, understand the school’s daily life, and approach staff members for assistance."
The building has also been equipped with an elevator, ramps, lifts, and accessible restrooms, all contributing to a fully inclusive educational environment. This project reflects the school’s commitment to making learning and communication accessible for students with diverse needs.
