UAF President Voices Discontent with Match Officiating
The Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) has initiated official investigations into several referees and members of its refereeing committee. This action follows strong criticism from UAF President Andriy Shevchenko regarding the standard of officiating in matchweek 19 of the Ukrainian Premier League. The probe was launched on Monday morning. The controversy centers on the key fixture between Polissya Zhytomyr and Dynamo Kyiv, where the officiating team led by Mykola Balakin made several contentious decisions.
Controversial Decisions in Key Match
During the match, a goal against Dynamo was disallowed following a VAR review, and Dynamo defender Christian Bilovar was not sent off for a serious foul. Andriy Shevchenko stated:
'The latest round of the Ukrainian championship has raised numerous questions for us concerning the referees. We are dissatisfied with the level of officiating in this matchweek. We provide all the necessary conditions for referees to work comfortably, and they must feel a high level of responsibility for their work and their decisions.' Andriy Shevchenko
In other national team news, Ukraine will begin its new UEFA Nations League campaign with an away match against Hungary on September 25. In the draw for the 2026/27 Nations League season, Ukraine was placed in League B, Group 2, where its opponents will be:
- Hungary
- Georgia
- Northern Ireland
The winner of Group B2 will earn promotion to League A of the Nations League.
The UAF's investigation underscores the critical importance of officiating quality in Ukrainian football, as refereeing decisions can directly impact match outcomes and the title race. This probe represents a significant step toward improving standards, especially given the frequent criticism from clubs and officials. The Nations League provides a crucial competitive framework for the Ukrainian national team as it builds towards future major tournaments, offering vital preparation outside of traditional qualifiers.
