Operations by Ukraine’s Defense Forces
On the night of July 9, Ukraine’s Defense Forces launched a series of attacks on Russian military and military-economic targets. In the Sea of Azov, these operations hit 12 tankers, one tugboat, and one dry cargo vessel that were transporting fuel for Russian forces and oil in violation of international sanctions. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.
Among the other targets struck was the 'Yug Rusi' oil terminal in Bataysk, Rostov Oblast. A fire broke out at the terminal following the strike. Additionally, an ammunition depot near Sorokyne in Luhansk region was hit. Ukraine’s Security Service also targeted two oil depots: 'Krasnaya Zarya' in Tver Oblast, located 520 km from Ukraine’s border, and 'Stavropolskaya' in Stavropol Krai, over 500 km from Ukraine. Fires ignited at both depots after the attacks.
Strategic Approach to Infrastructure Destruction
Ukraine’s Security Service stated that it continues systematic efforts to strike Russia’s oil sector, a key source of funding for the war against Ukraine. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine emphasized that the Defense Forces will keep systematically hitting targets that support Russian aggression. These actions aim to weaken Russia’s ability to sustain its military campaign.
Targets hit:
- 12 tankers
- 1 tugboat
- 1 dry cargo vessel
- 'Yug Rusi' oil terminal
- ammunition depot
- 'Krasnaya Zarya' oil depot
- 'Stavropolskaya' oil depot
These strikes underscore Ukraine’s strategic approach to dismantling infrastructure that supports Russia’s military operations. By hitting key oil sector assets, Ukraine aims to curb the financing of aggression, potentially disrupting Russian forces’ logistics. Such actions may also signal an escalation in the conflict and Ukraine’s intent to intensify operations in response to ongoing Russian hostilities.
The recent strikes on Russian oil facilities highlight a broader strategy by Ukraine to target military assets deep within enemy territory. This pattern of long-range attacks is becoming increasingly evident, as demonstrated by another series of operations aimed at crippling Russia's logistical capabilities.
