Massive Strike Hits Sumy

On July 3, Russia launched a large-scale attack on Sumy, killing the 33-year-old wife and 5-year-old daughter of a police officer. The bereaved husband serves in a special police battalion under the Main Department of the National Police in Sumy Region. In total, four people died in the assault, including a child, while 27 others were wounded—six of them children.

The strike involved guided aerial bombs and drones, with one KAB hitting an apartment building on Shevchenko Avenue. A store and a road crowded with people at the time were also caught in the blast zone. Some of the injured are in serious condition. The officer’s elder daughter, 13-year-old Veronika, sustained shrapnel wounds to her legs and is currently hospitalized.

According to Oleh Kashperuk, head of the Main Department of the National Police in Sumy Region, the deceased wife and daughter are Nataliia Ovcharova and her five-year-old girl. In the wake of the tragedy, authorities have prepared around 400 shelter spots in dormitories for evacuated residents, as numerous residential high-rises were damaged.
