Zelenskyy Unveils ‘Long-Range Sanctions’ Strategy After Ukrainian Strikes on Ufa Oil Facility

Зеленський презентує нові заходи покарання у відповідь на атаки на об'єкти енергетики в Росії.

Ukraine’s Defense Forces Target Russian Oil Infrastructure

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that his country’s defense forces have carried out strikes against Russian oil infrastructure. These operations targeted several key facilities, including:

  • oil depots in Stavropol and Tver,
  • a reserve fuel storage site,
  • an oil pumping station in Ufa,
  • and an oil loading terminal in the Rostov region.

The strikes are a direct response to Russia’s prolongation of the war and its ongoing attacks on Ukraine. For context, these operations aim to disrupt the logistical backbone of Russia’s military campaign.

Units from Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) hit two oil depots located roughly 500 kilometers from the front line. Simultaneously, other Ukrainian defense units struck a reserve fuel storage site about 800 kilometers from the front. Further afield, a pumping station in Ufa—nearly 1,500 kilometers from Ukraine’s border—was also targeted. Additionally, an oil loading terminal in Russia’s Rostov region, approximately 200 kilometers from the front line, came under attack.

Drone Attack and Ukraine’s Response

On the night of July 9, the Rostov region experienced a drone assault, according to Russian sources. Explosions were reported near the city of Azov, while two tankers sustained damage in the Taganrog Bay. President Zelenskyy commented on the broader strategy:

‘Our warriors are executing a plan of long-range sanctions in response to the prolongation of the war and Russian strikes. Every day of delay must bring the feeling of war to where it all began—to Russia.’ — Volodymyr Zelenskyy

These operations are part of a military strategy that emphasizes active engagement on enemy territory. By targeting critical infrastructure, Ukraine’s defense forces aim to degrade Russia’s capacity to sustain combat operations.

The strikes signal an escalation in the conflict and Ukraine’s determination to counter Russian aggression through direct military action on Russian soil. Damage to oil depots and related facilities could significantly hinder the logistics and fuel supply for Russian troops, potentially altering the dynamics on the battlefield. Moreover, these actions underscore Ukraine’s readiness to maintain sustained retaliatory operations, which may reshape the future trajectory of the war.

As Ukraine intensifies its military efforts against Russian oil infrastructure, it's important to note that similar strategies have been employed in the past. For example, on Ukraine's Constitution Day, the armed forces successfully targeted two oil refineries in Russia, marking a significant escalation in the conflict.
