Ukraine's Energy System: Where It Stands Now
Speaking in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Denys Shmyhal gave an update on the country's power grid and its readiness for the coming autumn-winter season. The address comes as the government finalizes its winter preparation plan. Today, Ukraine's nuclear fleet comprises nine Ukrainian-controlled units: three are being repaired, and five have already gone through their maintenance cycle.
By late August 2026, the system's total generating capacity was 15 GW. The cabinet expects to lift that to 19.6 GW by November 1 and to 21.4 GW by the end of the year. Restoration work has already brought 4.8 GW of capacity back, while roughly 4 GW is still being repaired.
Generation Mix and Demand Patterns

- nuclear plants supply more than 40%
- thermal stations contribute about 20%
- hydro plants provide 15%
Shmyhal also pointed to a possible 1 GW increase in electricity use due to abnormal heat. He emphasized that meeting the recovery and winter-readiness schedule depends on the security situation in the country and on no new damage occurring to power facilities.
