Apple Export in Ukraine and Other Countries
In Ukraine, over 60% of the apple harvest is processed, 35% goes to the fresh market, and only 2-3% is exported. These figures differ significantly from countries like Poland and Italy, which demonstrate much higher export volumes. For example, Poland exports 21% of its total apple production, while Italy exports 38%.
According to data, the pre-war export figure for Ukrainian apples was 7%, but it has now decreased to 2-3%. Other countries, such as France and Spain, also have significant export figures: 16% and 18%, respectively. Meanwhile, Belgium and the Netherlands export or re-export 60-70% of their apples, while Moldova and Serbia export 22% and 27%, respectively.
Challenges for Ukrainian Producers
Volodymyr Hurzhiy notes that these countries produce approximately 500 thousand tons of apples per year, making them Ukraine's closest neighbors among the top fifteen producers. This highlights the difference in export capabilities and needs, as the Ukrainian market lacks its own volume and cannot compete in exports with countries like Poland and Italy.
This situation indicates that Ukrainian apple producers need to find new markets and improve growing and storage technologies to enhance competitiveness on the international stage. Volodymyr Hurzhiy
In the context of declining export opportunities, it is also important to develop the domestic market to ensure stable demand for products. Increasing production efficiency and marketing strategies may be the key to improving the situation for Ukrainian apples in the future.
