Growing Tensions Between Kyiv and Washington

Relations between Kyiv and Washington are facing a crisis that analysts describe as a 'trial separation.' Following Donald Trump's inauguration, the United States' role as Ukraine's partner began to shift. The main catalyst for this rift was the joint U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran, which started in February 2026. In response to the crisis, Washington suspended sanctions on Russian oil in an effort to stabilize global prices. At the same time, American aid to Ukraine dropped by 99 percent, severely impacting bilateral cooperation. This dramatic reduction in support has forced Kyiv to reassess its reliance on its most powerful ally.

Ukraine's Defense Policy Shifts

Amid this changing foreign policy landscape, Volodymyr Zelensky has started to distance himself from the American ally. Ukraine has ramped up its domestic defense production and can now manufacture the majority of the drones it uses on its own. Homegrown interception systems have proven effective, shooting down over 60 percent of Russian drones. A European Union loan of $106 billion highlights continued European backing during this difficult period.

Russia's advance on the front lines has slowed. According to data from Black Bird Group, the occupiers' territorial gains over the past three months have been the worst since 2023. In some sectors, Russian forces have even lost ground. At the current pace of advance, it would take Moscow more than 30 years to capture the Donbas. The occupation command has set a goal of reaching the outskirts of Kramatorsk by the end of May. Vladimir Putin has acknowledged the possibility of an 'inevitable defeat' for his troops, signaling recognition of the challenging situation.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has been holding lengthy phone calls with Vladimir Putin while ignoring Zelensky. This has left the Ukrainian president feeling emboldened, as he describes the situation as a

“bargain for a few square kilometers.”
Zelensky agreed to a three-day ceasefire proposed by Trump, but the uncertainty in relations with the United States continues to put Ukraine in a precarious position.

Ukraine now needs to develop new strategies to maintain its defense capabilities amid shrinking U.S. military aid. Expanding domestic weapons production and strengthening ties with the European Union could be key to ensuring the country's stability. At the same time, the unpredictability of American policy may further complicate Ukraine's situation, forcing it to seek alternative partnerships with other international players.

As Ukraine navigates this precarious period, the lack of effective communication between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin has left Kyiv increasingly skeptical about U.S. involvement in peace efforts. This growing disillusionment is detailed in a recent report highlighting the stagnant results of numerous calls between the two leaders, further eroding trust in U.S.-led negotiations.
