New Strategic Openings for Ukraine in the Middle East
According to analyst Igor Tyshkevich, speaking with political scientist Yuriy Romanenko, the recent escalation in the Middle East presents a strategic opportunity for Ukraine. Specifically, Iranian drone attacks on cities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) create a potential opening. Tyshkevich argued that Ukraine could offer its hard-won expertise in downing Iranian Shahed drones to Gulf nations in exchange for vital investment and military-technical cooperation.
The drones Iran uses to attack Dubai and other UAE cities are older Shahed modifications. Meanwhile, Gulf states like the UAE possess a robust military-industrial complex capable of mass-producing long-range drones. These monarchies have long since evolved beyond being mere oil suppliers into ambitious, high-tech hubs pursuing extensive modernization programs.
A Proposed Model for Cooperation
Tyshkevich emphasized that Ukraine should seize this moment.
“This is precisely where smart state policy would latch onto such a chance. You don't set additional conditions, like 'we'll help you if you do something else.' Instead, you grab this opportunity,”he stated. He also suggested inviting delegations to demonstrate counter-drone technologies on the ground:
“A delegation, let's say, with a couple of teams equipped with drone interceptors or similar systems, to show practically how it's done.”
The expert stressed that partnering with nations possessing advanced military-industrial capabilities could yield significant benefits for Ukraine:
- Attracting investment to develop domestic production capacity.
- Gaining access to new defense technologies.
- Creating opportunities for joint production of drones and other military systems.
He added that Gulf states are actively developing their own defense industries for the post-war era.
“If we enter that market without money, but with technological potential, or at least the know-how and specialists who understand how it's done, we can obtain both funding and technology,”Tyshkevich concluded.
The Middle East situation, particularly the conflict escalation involving Iranian drones, could allow Ukraine to strengthen its international standing. For a nation defending itself against similar threats, this represents a chance to turn battlefield experience into diplomatic and economic capital. Cooperation with Gulf states would not only provide Ukraine with access to new technologies but also help attract crucial investment for post-war recovery. Ukraine's proven experience in countering drones could form the foundation for mutually beneficial agreements that foster development for all parties involved.
