Ukraine’s drone expertise positions it as a future security guarantor for Europe

Україна стає ключовим гравцем у забезпеченні безпеки європейського простору завдяки своїм новаторським рішенням у розробці безпілотників.

Assessing Ukraine’s role in the shifting global security landscape

Political analyst Viktor Andrusiv discussed on the show of political scientist Yuriy Romanenko the book by Peter Zeihan, which examines globalization and its possible consequences. Andrusiv argues that Ukraine has the potential to become a security guarantor for Europe and key trade routes, leveraging its extensive experience with drone operations. He also stressed the urgent need to establish private military companies (PMCs) and a unified European army.

During the conversation, Andrusiv highlighted that the Ukrainian military possesses unique combat expertise, particularly in the large-scale deployment of advanced unmanned systems. He noted that while Ukraine assembles drones from foreign components and is not among the world’s technological leaders, its practical experience is globally significant.

“Our advantage is not that we often talk about drones and think we are super high-tech. In reality, we simply assemble drones from some foreign components. Technologically, we are not in the world’s top tier, but we are at the top when it comes to experience.” - Viktor Andrusiv

Opportunities and hurdles for Ukraine

Andrusiv also emphasized the inevitable reduction of the U.S. military presence worldwide. “Today, as the States are leaving, a vast field opens up for us,” he said. According to the analyst, this creates opportunities for Ukraine, as Western corporations are already seeking people with drone operation skills. He believes “this is a huge, truly colossal prospect for us.” However, Andrusiv pointed out that Ukraine has yet to establish its own PMCs, a step he considers critically urgent at this moment.

Additionally, Andrusiv explored the possibility of using Ukrainian unmanned surface vessels to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, protecting ships from maritime attacks. “We have these unmanned boats. They can provide cover from sea-based strikes and anti-ship missiles,” he emphasized. This underscores the value of Ukraine’s expertise for safeguarding international shipping in the Middle East.

Andrusiv also stressed the importance of forming a European army. “I constantly raised the issue of a European army, and everyone laughed at me,” he remarked. Now, with the U.S. scaling back its military footprint, there is a growing need for a new, integrated defense system for the European continent. He also noted that “the elite of the European Union is against Ukraine,” which complicates the implementation of these plans.

In conclusion, Andrusiv expressed hope that cooperation with Poland—which is building a powerful land army—could serve as the foundation for a new European security framework. “Together with the Poles, who are building a very strong ground force, and with our experience, that would be a real force capable of regulating global trade routes,” he summarized.

Andrusiv’s discussion highlights Ukraine’s strategic role amid changes in global security, particularly as the U.S. reduces its military commitments. The use of innovative technologies like drones opens new avenues for the country in international security and defense, as well as in collaboration with European nations. These factors could significantly shape the formation of new alliances and security systems in the region.

As Ukraine navigates its pivotal role in the evolving security framework of Europe, the demand for its drone capabilities has surged, particularly in light of recent U.S. troop withdrawals. This situation parallels Germany's interest in leveraging Ukrainian expertise in unmanned systems, as both nations recognize the strategic importance of advanced drone operations.
