Global Campaign Marks 40th Anniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster

Ukrainian diplomats have launched an international campaign timed to the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl catastrophe, aimed at reminding the global community of ongoing nuclear safety threats stemming from Russian actions. The initiative highlights Russia’s occupation of the Chernobyl and Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plants, a drone strike that breached the protective shell of the New Safe Confinement structure, attacks on energy infrastructure, and nuclear blackmail tactics. Campaign events have been held at the United Nations, the OSCE, the IAEA, and UNESCO.

Campaign Activities and Outcomes

The campaign featured a range of activities, including:

  • commemorative ceremonies
  • conferences
  • photo exhibitions
  • film screenings
  • virtual and augmented reality projects

Ukraine’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York organized several key events, such as:

  • a photo exhibition at UN Headquarters
  • a speech during a commemorative session of the UN General Assembly
  • a side event

A concert at Carnegie Hall is also scheduled for May 1, 2024.

Ukraine’s Permanent Mission to International Organizations in Vienna carried out activities within the framework of the OSCE Permanent Council and the IAEA. These efforts led to the adoption of a resolution condemning the use of nuclear power plants as instruments of war, which also demanded the return of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to full Ukrainian control. Partners joined a joint statement from the international conference on Chernobyl, underscoring global support for nuclear safety.

A recent decision by UNESCO’s Executive Board has further strengthened international pressure on Russia, emphasizing the critical importance of nuclear security. The campaign materials also stressed the correct spelling of the city name as "Chornobyl" in line with Ukrainian orthography. The campaign hashtag #Chornobyl40 has become a symbol of international recognition and solidarity.

Participants in the campaign include Ukrainian diaspora communities abroad, cultural centers, universities, civil society organizations, and international partners, all working together to raise awareness about nuclear safety threats. Another UN General Assembly resolution is planned for December 2025, which will reaffirm the importance of Chernobyl-related issues and nuclear safety more broadly.

This international campaign serves as a crucial reminder to the world of the dangers associated with nuclear energy, especially in the context of armed conflict.

It not only raises awareness of historical events but also calls for concrete action to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities under threat. Such initiatives help build international consensus on the need to uphold nuclear safety standards and protect civilians from potential disasters.

As the global community reflects on the Chernobyl disaster, it is crucial to recognize the ongoing threats posed by Russia to Ukrainian nuclear facilities. The situation is further complicated by recent incidents involving targeted assaults on these sites, which have raised alarms about safety and security.
