Talks with Sweden's and Norway's defense ministers
Ukraine's acting defense minister, Yevhenii Khmara, met with his counterparts from Sweden and Norway for discussions centered on boosting air defense, financing drone programs, and stopping ballistic and cruise missiles. The agenda also covered long-term defense cooperation, including the European FREYJA antiballistic missile initiative. Priorities and military needs
Khmara shared takeaways from a recent visit to frontline units, where he collected the troops' most urgent requirements. "The soldiers have clear needs. We are counting on partners to provide fast funding for drones, especially reconnaissance and middle strike types," he said.
Countering ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as jet-powered Shahed drones, was a key priority in the discussions. Ukraine stressed the need for interceptor missiles and tools for asymmetric responses.
The two sides also talked about advancing the European FREYJA antiballistic project, measures to reinforce Ukraine by the end of summer, and the expansion of aviation capabilities. Sweden, which co-leads the Electronic Warfare Coalition, said it is ready to assist Ukraine on air-power matters, particularly regarding Gripen fighter jets. Norway was described as one of Ukraine's largest partners, and the ministers reviewed joint defense-industry projects and ways to strengthen air defense.
