Working Together to Shield Ukraine’s Airspace

According to ХВИЛЯ: Air defense has been a recurring theme in Ukraine’s bilateral talks with European allies, and this latest round was no exception. President Volodymyr Zelensky and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre discussed the supply of air-defense systems and coordination with partners possessing anti-ballistic-missile capabilities. Zelensky used social media to thank Norway for its readiness to help on both tracks, saying:

“I am grateful to Norway for being ready to help with supplying air-defense systems and with engaging partners that have the necessary anti-ballistic capabilities. We are doing everything possible to speed up all processes, because our people need to be protected every day.” - Volodymyr Zelensky

FREYJA Program and Bilateral Next Steps

The conversation also covered the FREYJA program, in which Norwegian representatives are actively involved. Zelensky briefed Støre on the program’s implementation and the timeline for upcoming actions, and the two leaders aligned their planned activity for August. Zelensky added:

“I updated Jonas on the implementation of FREYJA and the schedule of our next moves. Norwegian representatives are involved in the work, and we value their contribution. We also coordinated our activity for August.” - Volodymyr Zelensky

Both sides are counting on important bilateral results under the strategic partnership framework in the weeks ahead. Earlier, the news outlet Khvylya reported on the PURL weapons procurement program, which could also become a significant element of bilateral cooperation.

The agreement underscores the growing military cooperation between Ukraine and Norway, an important factor given the current security situation in the region. Closer collaboration on air defense and anti-ballistic systems may substantially strengthen Ukraine’s defensive capacity against threats from the aggressor. Both nations clearly intend to deepen their strategic partnership, with potential long-term benefits for European security.
