Ukraine’s Drone Campaign Aims to Sever Russia’s Land Bridge to Crimea

Дронова стратегія України прагне ускладнити сухопутне сполучення Росії з Кримом.

A New Approach to Crimea

According to a report from The Telegraph, Ukraine has shifted its military strategy to focus on isolating Crimea through drone strikes targeting Russian logistics—particularly the R-280 highway. This marks a departure from the large-scale counteroffensive of 2023, which fell short of expectations. Ukrainian General Mykhailo Zabrodskyi and former Defense Minister Andriy Zahorodnyuk have both weighed in on this strategic pivot.

Objectives and Tactics

Kyiv is now pursuing a plan designed to pressure Moscow into peace negotiations by cutting off the land corridor to Crimea. The earlier attempt to isolate the peninsula failed during the 2023 counteroffensive, when Russian defensive positions proved far stronger than anticipated. Today, Ukrainian drones are striking targets inside Russia and occupied territories, and the pace of Moscow’s offensive has reportedly slowed as a result.

  • The R-280 highway—which links Rostov-on-Don with Mariupol, Berdiansk, Melitopol, and Crimea—has become a primary target for Ukrainian strikes.
  • In recent weeks, trucks, fuel tankers, and other military vehicles have been systematically destroyed along this route.

This campaign revives the concept of isolating Crimea, a key goal of the 2023 counteroffensive. However, the current strategy is more limited in scope, with the main objectives being to stabilize the front line and halt Russia’s advance.

General Mykhailo Zabrodskyi stated: 'After the counteroffensive failed to deliver results... the idea of isolating Crimea has resurfaced. Today, the quantity and quality of Ukraine’s strike drones make such a plan feasible.'

On the night of June 7, 2026, a series of explosions were reported near the village of Chonhar. Ukrainian Special Operations Forces (SSO) conducted a mission in occupied Crimea, during which Middle-strike SSO units attacked the Semykolodezianska oil depot and a major offshore oil terminal. Andriy Zahorodnyuk, who served as Ukraine’s defense minister from 2019 to 2020, emphasized:

'The entire idea was that if they cannot sustain the front, then ground warfare in that area is dead—it will be over.'
Notably, the current operation is being carried out with a higher degree of operational secrecy, signaling a new approach to combat operations.

Ukraine’s shift toward isolating Crimea reflects an adaptation to evolving battlefield conditions and a desire to respond more effectively to challenges. The emphasis on drone strikes highlights the use of modern technology to achieve military objectives, especially after traditional methods failed to deliver the desired outcomes. This approach could become a key element in the ongoing fight for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and in securing the front line.

As Ukraine intensifies its drone campaign to disrupt Russian supply lines, military analysts emphasize the importance of a comprehensive strategy for reclaiming Crimea. In this context, General Hodges outlines three critical steps that could bolster Ukraine's efforts and reshape the dynamics of the conflict in the region.
