Ukraine Brings 160 Prisoners Home on June 26

Україна повертає на батьківщину 160 військових в червні.

Prisoner Exchange Between Russia and Ukraine

A prisoner exchange between the Russian Federation and Ukraine took place on June 26, resulting in the return of 160 Ukrainian servicemen. Notably, 99% of those freed had been captured in 2022, highlighting the lengthy period of their detention. Among the returnees are 58 officers and 115 defenders of Mariupol.

According to Dmytro Lubinets, 'the unique aspect of this return is that nearly 99% of those released were taken prisoner in 2022. They endured extremely harsh conditions of captivity for over four years!'

This underscores the severe circumstances under which Ukrainian soldiers were held.

The group includes 21 individuals who share the same surname, which may indicate the presence of namesakes. The oldest among those returned is 66 years old, while the youngest is 26. Lubinets also noted that 'seven defenders are now home who will celebrate their birthdays in June, and two of them had their special day just two days ago.'

Previous Prisoner Exchange

Earlier, on June 5, a separate exchange brought back 185 defenders and one civilian. This most recent swap marks another step in ongoing efforts by both sides to address the issue of prisoners of war.

Prisoner exchanges represent a critical humanitarian milestone, as they not only repatriate soldiers but also shine a light on the prolonged captivity endured during the war. Such measures can help ease tensions between the parties and offer hope to families of those still held. These exchanges, occurring with some regularity, demonstrate the persistent commitment of both countries to resolving humanitarian challenges arising from the conflict.

The recent exchange not only highlights the resilience of those returning home but also emphasizes the ongoing humanitarian efforts between the two nations.
