Civilian Prisoners Come Home
Ukraine has successfully secured the release of seven civilians who had been illegally held by Russia since 2022. This humanitarian breakthrough was achieved through coordination with Yana Lantratova, the Human Rights Commissioner of the Russian Federation. The freed individuals come from Mariupol, the Bucha district in Kyiv region, as well as Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk oblasts.
The returnees range in age from 35 to 66 years old. All were detained in 2022 during the occupation of their home regions. Among them is a person abducted from their own home because their sons serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and another citizen who was arrested on their way to work on the very day the full-scale invasion began. The group also includes a volunteer who joined the 'Angels of Taira' brigade in Mariupol in 2022. Notably, Russian forces detained Yuliia Paievska (known as 'Taira') alongside this volunteer; she had been released earlier.
The Significance of Humanitarian Efforts
Dmytro Lubinets, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Human Rights, expressed gratitude to the Security Service of Ukraine, the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, and other state bodies for their contributions. He stated:
“Our team will do everything possible to ensure their rights are fully guaranteed and protected.” - Dmytro Lubinets
Additionally, on June 26, 2026, a prisoner exchange took place, resulting in the return of 160 Ukrainian defenders. Among the freed prisoners of war were:
- servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,
- the State Special Transport Service,
- the National Guard, and
- the State Border Guard Service.
All had been in captivity since 2022 and participated in the defense of Mariupol and the Azovstal plant, carrying out missions in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy directions.
The return of both civilians and prisoners of war marks a critical step in Ukraine's humanitarian efforts amid its prolonged conflict with Russia. These events underscore the Ukrainian government's commitment to protecting citizens' rights and supporting families affected by the war. Such humanitarian initiatives may help improve bilateral relations during the conflict and raise hopes for further exchanges and the release of other detainees.
In a related development, the ongoing efforts to secure the release of Ukrainian captives have resulted in significant successes, including a recent exchange that brought home 160 military personnel who had been held since 2022. This operation underscores the commitment to ensuring the safe return of all citizens, whether they are civilians or defenders of Ukraine.
