Meeting Between Dmytro Lubinets and Yana Lantratova

Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, and Russian Ombudswoman Yana Lantratova held talks to address critical issues surrounding prisoner exchanges, detention conditions, and missing persons. During the discussion, Lubinets stressed the need for additional mechanisms to facilitate prisoner swaps. He revealed that he delivered a letter from mothers of families affected by the Olenivka tragedy and raised the matter of locating and verifying individuals listed as missing in action.

Lubinets also emphasized the importance of monitoring the conditions under which Ukrainian prisoners of war are held. He brought up the verification and release of civilian hostages, as well as the mutual exchange of letters and packages between prisoners and their families.

“We discussed additional mechanisms for organizing prisoner exchanges. A separate topic was our soldiers who went through Olenivka,” said Dmytro Lubinets.

Prisoner of War Exchanges

The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed that Ukraine successfully conducted a prisoner exchange with Russia, bringing back 160 military personnel. Among those released are:

  • 115 defenders of Mariupol
  • 58 officers
  • 16 fighters from the Azov corps units, including one Azov member who defended the city

Nearly all of those freed were taken captive in 2022. This reflects Ukraine’s sustained efforts to bring its defenders home from captivity.

This meeting and the discussions on prisoner exchanges highlight the importance of international dialogue in resolving humanitarian issues tied to the conflict. The repatriation of Ukrainian troops from captivity, particularly those from Olenivka, also demonstrates that Ukraine continues to work toward upholding the rights of its citizens, striving to improve their detention conditions and address the cases of missing persons. This represents a significant step in boosting the morale of servicemen and their families.

The recent exchange of 160 prisoners underscores Ukraine's ongoing commitment to securing the release of its defenders.
