Ukraine has submitted a request for the extradition of Russian archaeologist Alexander Butyagin from Poland. The man was detained in Warsaw by Polish special services after he had been lecturing in the Netherlands. Ukraine accuses him of illegal archaeological excavations in the Crimean territory occupied by Russia.

The official request for extradition has already been sent to the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw. Polish investigators will consider this request and any possible grounds for refusal. The case will be submitted to the court, which will decide on the extradition of Butyagin. Russia condemned this move and imposed sanctions against the archaeologist until 2035 for supporting the occupation.
