Ukraine’s EU Accession Negotiations
Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy is moving ahead with preparations for European Union membership negotiations under Chapter 27, which addresses environmental and climate change issues. The sixth meeting of the Working (Negotiating) Group recently took place, where participants reviewed progress on key negotiation benchmarks and the rollout of Ukraine’s National Program for aligning its legislation with EU law.
Getting Ready to Implement European Standards
Discussions during the session also focused on drafting implementation plans for EU legal acts and outlining further legislative changes needed to bring Ukrainian law in line with European standards. Ukraine has shifted from the planning phase to actively executing tasks, particularly in water policy and water quality. The Ministry of Economy has developed a draft law on water governance, based on EU law and the principles of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
Meeting participants stressed the importance of cooperation between the Government, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and the Committee on Environmental Policy and Natural Resource Management—a collaboration seen as critical for successfully implementing the planned changes.
These steps highlight Ukraine’s progress toward European standards, especially in environmental policy. The emphasis on inter-branch cooperation underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to effective reform. Meeting these benchmarks could prove decisive for Ukraine’s continued advancement on the path to European integration.
