Introducing Ukraine's Advanced FP-9 Ballistic Missile

Ukraine is in the process of developing the FP-9 ballistic missile, designed to strike targets up to 850-855 kilometers away, including locations within the Moscow region. This missile is slated for completion by autumn 2026. The FP-9 builds upon the earlier FP-7 model, which has a significantly shorter range of approximately 200 kilometers and has already seen combat use.

The FP-9 project is being led by the defense firm Fire Point. This missile will feature a warhead weighing as much as 800 kilograms and achieve speeds of 2.2 kilometers per second. It will be launched from a mobile ground-based platform. The missile measures about 9.5 meters in length and has a diameter of roughly 1.1 meters.

“FP-9 is intended to be a longer-range successor to Ukraine’s FP-7 missile.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The development of the FP-9 missile comes amid increased missile and drone attacks from Russia. According to President Zelenskyy, large-scale deployment of Ukraine’s ballistic missiles depends not only on domestic capabilities but also on the supply of key components from international sources. The FP-9 is often compared to the American ATACMS and Russian Iskander-M missiles, highlighting its strategic importance in the current military landscape.

FP-9's Role in Strengthening Ukraine’s Defense

It’s important to note that the FP-7 missile, FP-9’s predecessor, has already proven its effectiveness in combat. However, the FP-9 promises to greatly extend the operational reach of Ukraine’s armed forces. Successfully bringing this missile into service could significantly alter the regional balance of power.

The FP-9 development represents a critical advancement in Ukraine’s efforts to bolster its defense amid ongoing Russian aggression. By extending the range at which threats can be engaged, Ukrainian forces will gain enhanced strategic flexibility in military operations. At the same time, reliance on imported parts underscores the need for continued growth in Ukraine’s domestic defense industry and international cooperation to ensure the project’s successful completion.

The advancements in missile technology are crucial for Ukraine's defense strategy, especially in light of recent developments. As the combat debut of the FP-7 tactical missile showcases its operational capabilities, the FP-9 aims to take this a step further by significantly enhancing Ukraine's striking power and deterrence against potential threats.
