Ukraine Expands Its Missile Strike Capabilities
Ukraine has significantly increased both the range and frequency of its missile strikes deep inside Russia, triggering air raid alerts across regions home to more than 70% of the country’s population. Sirens are now sounding in central Russia, the Volga area, and the North Caucasus. The first missile warning was recorded in the Omsk region of Western Siberia, nearly 3,000 km from the Ukrainian border.
For the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion, alerts were activated in the Novgorod and Pskov regions. Kyiv is deploying its own cruise missiles and drones for these attacks. The Flamingo missile, with a range of up to 3,000 km, has already struck a defense plant in Cheboksary (Chuvashia), located over 1,500 km away. Additional targets hit include:
- an oil refinery in Ufa;
- a military facility in the Penza region.
In a separate attack, the oil refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban was hit by more than 100 drones and five cruise missiles simultaneously. According to Sam Cranny-Evans, a military analyst at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI),
“Ukraine often tries to overwhelm Russian air defenses with drones so that cruise missiles can break through”. These strikes are causing tangible damage to Russia’s military industry and economy, demonstrating to the Russian public the real cost of the war.
For now, the Kremlin has not commented on the situation, though Vladimir Putin continues to insist that Russian attacks remain more destructive.
