New Agreements Between Germany and Ukraine
Germany and Ukraine have signed ten new agreements at various levels, including a major defense pact with a total budget of €4 billion. The deals focus on strengthening air defense, joint drone production, and other critical military support. This announcement was made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. This substantial package underscores Germany's continued role as a leading military supporter of Ukraine in its ongoing conflict.
Following negotiations with his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov detailed the specifics of the agreements. The package includes:
- The transfer of hundreds of air defense missiles;
- Joint production of AI-powered drones for frontline needs;
- The procurement of several hundred missiles for Patriot air defense systems;
- An addition of 36 new IRIS-T launchers to Ukraine's multi-layered air defense network.
Berlin has also allocated €300 million specifically to develop Ukraine's long-range strike capabilities.
Core Components of the Joint Project
The joint initiative consists of three core pillars: bolstering air defense, developing long-range capabilities, and co-producing drones. The parties agreed to launch the joint production of medium-range AI-equipped drones under the bilateral "Build with Ukraine" initiative. In its first phase, the joint production line is set to deliver 5,000 of these drones to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
'I want to thank Germany, the Chancellor personally, and the German government for the agreements prepared for today. We have 10 documents that have already been signed.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Zelenskyy also emphasized the strategic importance of developing European industrial capacity for defense: 'We must ensure our capabilities so that Europeans can produce here, in Europe, everything that is critically necessary for the defense of Europe.'
Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine proposed a comprehensive drone agreement to Germany, covering various drone types, missiles, and software for modern warfare. 'Our teams are starting concrete work,' he stated. These agreements mark a significant step in strengthening Ukraine's defense and deepening cooperation between the two nations in the face of contemporary security challenges.
The signing of these new pacts signifies a deepening of military collaboration between Germany and Ukraine amid heightened security threats in Europe. The focus on joint drone manufacturing and enhanced air defense are crucial moves to fortify Ukraine's military resilience. This partnership highlights Germany's pivotal role as a security guarantor in the region and represents a long-term investment in a more self-sufficient European defense industry.
