Joint Coordination Task Force Between Ukraine and Belarus
Ukraine and Belarus's democratic opposition have agreed to establish a shared coordination task force aimed at countering the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, tightening sanctions, and supporting Belarusian volunteers. The announcement came from opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya following her first official visit to Ukraine. A permanent coordination mechanism between Belarusian democratic forces and Ukrainian authorities has now been launched.
Key Objectives of the New Task Force
The newly formed task force will address issues related to:
- security
- sanctions
- support for volunteers
- legal challenges faced by Belarusian citizens in Ukraine
Tsikhanouskaya also presented proposals for additional sanctions. She stated:
“We have submitted proposals for new sanctions and urged Ukraine to join the case against Lukashenko at the International Criminal Court. For us, this mission serves as a body to improve coordination between Belarusians and Ukraine's political structures.”
During her visit to Kyiv, the Mission of Belarusian Democratic Forces was officially inaugurated. Tsikhanouskaya emphasized that:
“this mission will make our work more consistent and visible. It will become a platform for dialogue, practical cooperation, and support.”
The meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya took place on May 26 on the sidelines of an international summit that brought together representatives from 24 countries.
Ultimately, this initiative seeks to strengthen collaboration between Ukraine and Belarusian democratic forces in the fight against the authoritarian regime in Belarus. The creation of the coordination task force and the opening of the Mission of Belarusian Democratic Forces underscore Ukraine's commitment to supporting democratic processes in its neighboring country, which could significantly impact the political landscape of the region.
The establishment of the coordination task force marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to challenge Lukashenko's regime. In a related development, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has also taken action by filing criminal charges against Lukashenko in The Hague. This move highlights the broader strategy of leveraging international legal frameworks to hold authoritarian leaders accountable.
