Geneva Negotiations Commence

Bilateral talks between Ukrainian and American delegations began in Geneva on February 26. The Ukrainian negotiating team is led by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. The U.S. delegation is represented by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Other members of the Ukrainian delegation include:

  • David Arakhamia
  • Oleksiy Sobolev
  • Daryna Marchak

The meeting's agenda focuses on key issues, including mechanisms for economic support, Ukraine's recovery, and investment attraction tools that form part of a proposed 'prosperity package.' The delegations are also working to prepare for a subsequent round of trilateral negotiations that will involve the Russian side. A humanitarian track and the subject of potential prisoner exchanges are significant aspects of the discussions.

Russian Delegation's Involvement

Separately, Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev will travel to Switzerland for talks with the American side. Meetings between the Russian and American delegations are also scheduled for February 26. Rustem Umerov noted that the negotiations aim to synchronize positions ahead of the next phase and to focus on practical solutions, particularly regarding the return of Ukrainian citizens. The results of the meeting will be made public following its conclusion.

These talks occur against a backdrop of prolonged regional tension and a severe humanitarian situation in Ukraine. The collaborative efforts of the Ukrainian and American sides could mark a significant step in bolstering international support for Ukraine. Engaging with the Russian delegation in future trilateral talks remains a critical component for any potential progress toward conflict resolution.
