The situation with electricity supply in Ukraine
On March 25, there are no forecasts for the implementation of electricity consumption restriction measures in Ukraine. This is good news for consumers as it ensures stability in electricity supply amid the current energy situation. At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has decided to allocate UAH 12.85 billion as part of resilience plans for regions, which will aid in preparations for the upcoming winter.
This funding will be directed towards the protection of 209 critical infrastructure facilities located in frontline regions and the Kyiv region. This is an important step to ensure the safety of energy facilities in an environment of increased risks. Overall, the need for recovery and modernization of Ukraine's energy sector over the next ten years is estimated at USD 90.6 billion. This need exceeds the previous damage estimates by 34%, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Electricity imports and preparations for winter
In addition, Ukraine has increased electricity imports, particularly from Moldova and EU countries, following the start of the repair campaign at nuclear power plants. Electricity imports have reached 35 thousand MWh. The priorities for preparations for the winter of 2026-2027 include:
- protection of energy facilities;
- development of distributed generation;
- ensuring additional power sources for heating and water supply facilities;
- decentralization of heat supply.
These measures aim to strengthen Ukraine's energy security in the future.
The situation with electricity supply in Ukraine remains critically important in the context of the energy war. The absence of restrictions on electricity consumption during this period may indicate improvements in the energy system; however, the necessary measures for protecting critical infrastructure point to ongoing risks. Government investments in the recovery of the energy sector and the increase of electricity imports are key steps to ensure stability in the future.
As preparations for the winter season intensify, the government’s substantial financial commitment underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining a reliable power supply.
