Forest Road Construction Resumes
Ukraine's state enterprise 'Forests of Ukraine' has resumed construction in April on 25 forest roads, totaling nearly 90 kilometers in length, after a winter pause. These road projects, which began in the autumn of 2025, are being implemented across the Carpathian, Northern, Podilsk, Polissia, and Capital regional branches. This infrastructure push is part of a broader effort to modernize the country's forestry management and improve access to remote areas.
A key project is a new road over 2 km long in the Nadvirna forestry unit, which will provide access to timber reserves of 22.7 thousand cubic meters. In the Korosten forestry unit, a three-kilometer road nearing completion will shorten logging truck routes by 10 km, with the cost per cubic meter of timber in this area expected to drop by roughly 20%.
Social Benefits of Road Construction
The construction in the Putyl forestry unit also carries social importance, as it will shorten the journey for residents of mountain settlements to their district center by 10 km. Furthermore, a major overhaul of a road in the Mekshuniv forestry unit in Chernihiv region will ensure firefighting equipment can reach a planned water reservoir equipped with a pier for rapid water collection.
For 2026, the state enterprise 'Forests of Ukraine' plans to build 60 forest roads with a total length exceeding 200 kilometers, signaling a continued commitment to infrastructure vital for the country's forestry and ecology. The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has allocated 298.8 million hryvnias from the state budget's reserve fund for measures related to strengthening national defense capabilities.
The resumption of forest road construction is a significant step in improving Ukraine's forestry infrastructure. This initiative will not only foster economic development but also enhance the social well-being of populations in mountainous and remote regions by providing faster access to resources and reducing transportation costs, which can positively impact overall production expenses.
As Ukraine invests significantly in enhancing its infrastructure, the recent allocation of 15.6 billion hryvnias for road repairs underscores the government's commitment to improving transportation across the country. This initiative is expected to complement the ongoing forest road projects and enhance connectivity, particularly in remote areas vital for both forestry operations and local communities.
