Fisherman’s Day in Ukraine

Ukraine marks Fisherman’s Day annually on the second Sunday of July, with the 2026 observance falling on July 12. The holiday was officially established by President Leonid Kuchma through a decree issued on June 22, 1995. Its origins trace back to 1965, when the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR declared the second Sunday of July as Fisherman’s Day.

This same date is also recognized globally as World Civil Aviation Flight Attendant Day. The first stewards appeared in Germany in 1928, and by 1930, Boeing Air Transport became the first airline to hire a female flight attendant, Ellen Church. According to folk signs for July 12, clear weather on this day promises a favorable year, while morning dew indicates a sunny day. If there is no dew in the morning, rain is expected. Clouds coming from the west signal rain, whereas clouds from the east bring improving weather. It is believed that on this day, one should avoid heavy physical labor, knitting, sewing, embroidering, arguing, or swimming in bodies of water.
