First Combat Deployment of Ukraine's FP-7 Ballistic Missile
Ukraine has successfully fired its domestically produced FP-7 ballistic missile against a target in Russian-occupied territory for the first time. Developed by the Ukrainian defense firm Fire Point, the FP-7 was publicly announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky, who also shared video footage of the missile launch. This missile boasts an operational range of approximately 250 kilometers, carries a warhead weighing over 200 kilograms, and reaches altitudes up to 60 kilometers, highlighting its significant battlefield capabilities.
With this milestone, Ukraine joins an exclusive group of roughly ten nations capable of manufacturing ballistic missiles, alongside global powers such as:
- United States
- China
- France
- Iran
- Russia
However, Ukraine faces considerable challenges in ballistic missile production due to the high costs involved, the complexity of guidance systems, and the need for materials that can endure extreme temperatures. Additionally, a separate Ukrainian ballistic missile program, unrelated to the FP-7, failed to achieve success despite testing efforts conducted in 2024.
A domestically engineered ballistic missile was developed under intense pressure and deployed on the battlefield in record time.

Ukraine's defense industry also manufactures various other weapons, including aerial, ground, and sea drones, electronic warfare systems, howitzers, and two types of cruise missiles known as 'Neptune' and 'Flamingo.' Yet, the limited quantity of cruise missiles has resulted in their infrequent use.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s stockpile of Patriot missiles is depleting, even as Russia continues its aggressive campaign, launching 195 ballistic and hypersonic missiles in July 2024 alone. Given these pressures, President Zelensky emphasized the critical need to expand domestic ballistic missile production to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
This breakthrough underscores Ukraine’s determination to advance its defense industry amidst ongoing conflict. The operational deployment of the FP-7 missile could significantly shift the frontline dynamics and highlights the urgent necessity for continued investment in advanced weapon technologies to meet evolving security threats.
As Ukraine continues to enhance its military capabilities, the recent combat deployment of the FP-7 ballistic missile marks a significant step forward. This development comes amid ongoing production efforts, as confirmed by President Zelensky.
