Push to Remove Russia’s Veto Power and Permanent Status at the UN Security Council

Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Andriy Melnyk, has called for Russia to be stripped of its permanent membership on the UN Security Council. Speaking during a Council session, Melnyk argued that an aggressor nation should not retain veto power or influence over the body’s decisions, stating:

“A state that violates the UN Charter and wages a war of aggression cannot continue to enjoy the right of veto.”
He further emphasized that Russia’s continued presence as a permanent member undermines global trust in the entire international security system.

Key Arguments Behind the Demand

The call is grounded in Russia’s repeated breaches of the UN Charter, as well as its obstruction of international resolutions on:

  • ending the war;
  • holding perpetrators of war crimes accountable.

Melnyk also pointed out that Moscow uses the UN platform to spread disinformation.

Meanwhile, intelligence reports indicate that the Russian military is losing approximately 254 soldiers for every square kilometer of Ukrainian territory it captures. In response to the ongoing situation, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff to assess Russian plans for offensive operations along the Chernihiv-Kyiv axis. He instructed Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare additional diplomatic measures targeting Belarus.

Ukraine’s demand to revoke Russia’s permanent seat on the UN Security Council highlights the vital role international organizations play in maintaining global security and the urgent need to reform their structures to address modern threats. This issue could become a pivotal point in international politics, as the credibility of the UN as an institution hinges on its ability to respond to aggression and violations of international law. At the same time, the prolonged conflict in eastern Ukraine requires the country’s leadership to intensify diplomatic efforts to secure continued support from international partners.

As Ukraine intensifies its diplomatic efforts against Russia, a new threat from Belarus has emerged, prompting urgent actions from Ukraine's military leadership. This situation underscores the interconnected nature of regional security challenges and highlights the need for a comprehensive response.
