Meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine with the UN representative
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, held a meeting with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, who is visiting Ukraine. During the meeting, the parties discussed the situation on the battlefield, Russian attacks, the humanitarian situation in the temporarily occupied Oleshky, preparation for winter, and threats in the Black Sea.
Tom Fletcher visited Kherson, where locals live and work under constant Russian attacks. During the discussion, Andrii Sybiha emphasized the need to ensure humanitarian access to people in the occupied Oleshky. The parties agreed to remain in close contact and focus on practical solutions.
Key topics of discussion
The key topics of discussion included:
- The situation on the battlefield and Ukraine's peace efforts together with international partners.
- Russian missile and drone attacks against Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure, which create additional humanitarian risks.
- Preparation for the winter period and support for the most vulnerable communities, primarily in frontline regions.
Tom Fletcher noted that since 2022, the UN has mobilized over $12 billion in humanitarian assistance for people affected by the Russian war against Ukraine. The situation in the Black Sea and threats to freedom of navigation remain serious challenges as Russia continues attacks on Ukrainian ports, maritime infrastructure, and civilian vessels.
Andrii Sybiha emphasized: 'While Ukraine works with partners to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace, Russia responds with new missiles and drones against our cities and people. This contrast speaks for itself. Pressure on Russia must increase to compel it to end the war.'
He added: 'Access to these communities and the ability to provide people with assistance are essential. Ukraine welcomes any possible efforts by the UN that will help ensure humanitarian access and provide the necessary assistance to our citizens in the occupied Oleshky.'
Thus, the meeting between the Ukrainian minister and the UN representative underscored the importance of international humanitarian assistance and the need to respond to the worsening situation in Ukraine due to ongoing military actions. In the face of constant threats to civilians and critical infrastructure, support from international organizations is crucial to meet the humanitarian needs of Ukrainians, especially in occupied regions.
